The Gastric Bypass Diet -- Crucial for Weight Loss Success
Gastric bypass is a procedure where the stomach capacity is lessened by creating a pouch at the top of the stomach which is then connected to the small intestine. As a result of this surgery, the patient will naturally consume less food and thus, less calories.
Gastric bypass surgery certainly shouldn't be regarded as an easy way to lose weight. Not only does the procedure itself carry risk, there is a lengthly recovery period. Also, it will be necessary to eat a special diet after having gastric bypass.
The gastric bypass diet begins as a liquid diet. For about two days following your surgery, you will be required to consume clear liquids only, such as broths and clear juices. This diet will be introduced slowly and you will take small amounts at a time.
After the liquid diet phase, you will move on to a nutritional meal replacement beverage. These beverages, such as Ensure, should be high in nutrients and protein. At this point in the gastric bypass diet, you will be instructed to begin taking a multivitamin.
The next phase in the gastric bypass diet is the puree phase. Your doctor will tell you when you are allowed to move to this phase. Usually, the puree phase will begin around two weeks after you leave the hospital. During this time, you'll eat soft, pureed foods like soft scrambled eggs and meats. Many people simply choose to eat baby food for this phase, which can save time, trouble and expense.
After about two months, you'll be allowed to progress to the final phase of the gastric bypass diet. Although you can have most any kind of food, you'll want to get plenty of protein. Food should be consumed in small portions throughout the day with liquids in between. You will probably be working with a dietician or nutritionist at this point to ensure you eat correctly.
Be advised that the gastric bypass diet can make or break your weight loss success. If you don't properly follow this diet as instructed by your doctor, not only will you sabotage your success, you'll put yourself in danger of harmful or uncomfortable side effects.
